Biography

Julie Lindell built her career as an installation artist in Seattle, showing at the Seattle Art Museum Gallery, the Bellevue Art Museum and the Center on Contemporary Art, as well as in Portland, Oregon, and Santa Rosa, California. In 2012 she moved to New York to study Critical Theory and the Arts at the School of Visual Arts, and she has stayed in the state since, becoming part of the Newburgh arts community; she took part in Newburgh Open Studios in 2016.

Her work looks at the jobs we assign to objects and at what happens once those jobs end. Borrowing from Darwinian ideas of adaptation, she reshapes and recombines things that have lost their use, so that they seem to evolve toward new identities. The approach raises wider questions about how fixed definitions of purpose give way over time. For 'Reclamation' she made 'Everything' (2025), a mixed-media found-object piece about twelve feet on each side, installed in the gallery garden.

Lindell's New York exhibitions include Holland Tunnel Gallery, Ann Street Gallery and Chris Davison Gallery in Newburgh, and Art Cake in Industry City, Brooklyn. In late 2025 she was a guest artist at Studio Kura's residency in Japan. Her work is in the City of Seattle Permanent Collection and the collection of the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa. She is a member of the Sculptors Guild.

Practice. Installation and sculpture built from found objects whose functions have been altered or abandoned, framed by ideas of adaptation and evolution.
