Biography
Alejandro Dron was born in Argentina in 1962 and grew up in La Plata, where he began studying sculpture as a child with Oscar Zarate. He later studied architecture at the national university in La Plata and trained with the painter Enrique Sobisch and with Gyula Kosice, a founder of the Madi movement, whose geometric, open-form approach remains a touchstone for his work. Through the late 1980s and 1990s he exhibited widely in Buenos Aires and La Plata, collecting numerous prizes, and in 1997 he was included in an Arte Madi exhibition at the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.
A Fulbright grant brought him to New York in 1996, where he earned an MFA in Computer Art at the School of Visual Arts in 1998. He went on to teach at SVA, Parsons and NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program, and worked as a 3D modeler for sculptor Alice Aycock. His sculptures in wood, metal, cement, paper and Plexiglas fold on hinges and lean on the diagonal, forms he describes as sitting on both sides of a threshold.
Dron has a long history in the Hudson Valley: he took part in the first and second Newburgh Sculpture Projects (2004, 2006), showed at Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh and BAU Gallery in Beacon, and was part of the 2007 Kingston Sculpture Biennial. In 2021 Holland Tunnel Newburgh paired him with Johan Wahlstrom in Limit / Less, and he returned for Reclamation in 2025. He also draws Zohar, a series of political cartoons.
Practice. Abstract, non-figurative sculpture built from hinged, folding planes and diagonals, in wood, metal, cement, paper and Plexiglas; earlier work included kinetic and interactive digital sculpture. Sources he cites include the Madi movement, Kabbalah and pre-Columbian art.
