Biography
Itty Neuhaus earned a BFA in painting from Pratt Institute (1985), attended Skowhegan (1989) and received an MFA in sculpture from Tyler School of Art (1991). Through the 1990s she showed large installations in New York at the Sculpture Center, Socrates Sculpture Park, Artists Space, Exit Art and PS1, and she has had solo exhibitions at Hallwalls in Buffalo, Black and White Gallery and Kentler International Drawing Space in Brooklyn, the Stadthaus in Ulm, Germany, and the University of Oulu, Finland. Much of her work begins with direct study of natural phenomena at the edges of the world.
She has made more than a dozen trips to Arctic regions, held Fulbright awards in Newfoundland and Labrador (2011) and through the Fulbright Arctic Initiative (2015-16), and developed projects such as Icylla: The Last Iceberg's Story. She has held more than twenty residencies, including MacDowell, Yaddo, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and Tao Hua Tan in China, and received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 1994. Neuhaus has taught at SUNY New Paltz since 2000.
Closer to home she has exhibited at Holland Tunnel Gallery and Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh (2020) and The Re Institute in Millerton (2024). In Unframed (2026) she showed work from three years of weekly painting sessions with the group.
Practice. Drawing, sculpture, video, photo-based work and installation rooted in field study of ice, water and landscape; recent work includes Chinese brush painting, monoprints and video performances.
