Biography

Emily Hopkins studied at Simon's Rock of Bard College, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League before earning a BFA in painting from Pratt Institute in 1987. She had an early solo show at Van Dam Space in New York in 1993 and showed at Warren Street Gallery in Hudson in 1995. Much of her exhibition history since then has been in Maine, including shows at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Carver Hill Gallery, Waterfall Arts, Granite Gallery and the Maine Art Gallery, and solo exhibitions at Husson College (2008), The Yellow Shed in Rockland (2016) and Hey Sailor Gallery in Searsport (2024). In New York she has shown at Garner Arts Center in Garnerville and Perry Lawson Fine Art in Nyack.

In 2026 she had a solo project-room show at Cynthia Winings Gallery in Blue Hill, Maine. Hopkins describes approaching a painting like a visual poem, building surfaces from drips, transparent washes and thick paint, and says that bringing in outside references such as landscape, figure and still life has fed her abstraction. That interest connects to Unframed at Holland Tunnel Revisited in Newburgh (2026), where she showed work made during three years of weekly painting sessions with the group.

Practice. Large-scale, intuitive abstract painting combining transparent drips, thick impasto and saturated color; draws on observation of landscape, figure and still life.
