Julie Schatz

Biography

Julie Schatz is a New York musician who moves easily between the concert stage and the studio. She trained in jazz, earning a bachelor's degree in jazz theory and performance, and performs as a violinist, jazz pianist and singer. As a producer and songwriter she works across R&B, hip-hop, pop and house, often bringing jazz harmony into her tracks. She has been a Roland artist since 2020 and writes production and music-theory tutorials for Splice, where she also licenses sample packs.

With DJ DX she performs as Soul Shades, a violin, piano and DJ duo whose remix videos have drawn wide attention on social media. The duo's single Buzz in London (2024) was written and produced by Schatz and DJ DX. Her other electronic releases include collaborations with Darksidevinyl ("Find Me / Another Life" on Deepalma and "11:11") and appearances on house compilations such as Milk & Sugar House Nation Ibiza 2024. Live, she plays events and private engagements around New York and the Hudson Valley.

Her site lists venues including the Museum of Modern Art, Webster Hall, Sony Hall, Gotham Hall, Oheka Castle and Blue Hill at Stone Barns. At Holland Tunnel Newburgh she hosted a Happy Hour Preview during the gallery's 25th-anniversary season in May 2022, and she returned in November 2023 as a guest singer and pianist at the Final Blast concert.
