Biography

Greg Slick was born in Jersey City in 1961 and has long been part of the Beacon art community. From 2006 to 2009 he co-ran Go North, a contemporary art space in Beacon, and he later founded The Artist's Statement Picture Show film series. Before turning fully to art he spent some three decades in advertising and communications.

His paintings and small stone sculptures take their cues from Neolithic and Iron Age sites, especially standing stones and megalithic structures in Ireland, Britain and Spain. A 2013 residency at the Burren College of Art in County Clare deepened that interest, and he was a Saltonstall fellow in 2017. Solo exhibitions include The Fertile Rock at the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum (2016), shows at Matteawan Gallery and No. 3 Reading Room in Beacon, Opened Ground at the Seligmann Center, and Depth Perception at the Garrison Art Center (2025).

He founded the artists' collective The International Society of Antiquaries; its third exhibition, The Longue Durée, was shown at Holland Tunnel Newburgh in 2021. In 2026 he curated The Dark Abyss of Time there, a group show on time and material memory named after the archaeologist Laurent Olivier's book. He also serves as chief docent at Magazzino Italian Art and has organized exhibitions for the Dorsky Museum and the Garrison Art Center.

Practice. Paintings on wood panel, works on paper and pecked-stone sculpture that borrow the look of archaeological stratigraphic drawings to place stone, manufactured and biological shapes in abstract pictorial space. Recurring subjects are monumentality, legacy, and the meeting of the built and natural worlds.
