Biography
Corinne Beardsley grew up on Maryland's Eastern Shore and trained in ceramics at the Hartford Art School (BFA, 2007) and UMass Dartmouth before earning an MFA in sculpture at the New York Academy of Art in 2011. Her sculptures, installations and performances connect remembered bodily experience to nature. Abstract figurative clay pieces often appear caught mid-transformation or read as a record of touch. For The Dark Abyss of Time she showed ceramics made with clay she foraged in the Hudson Valley and marbled into layered strata.
Some of the patterns come from pareidolia, the habit of seeing faces in random forms, and from insect camouflage, and several pieces are opened up like cross-sections. Residencies and fellowships have taken her to the Vermont Studio Center, Red Lodge Clay Center, Babayan Culture House in Cappadocia, the University of Tasmania, Poh Chang Academy of Art in Bangkok, the Byrdcliffe ceramic studio in Woodstock, and a New York Academy of Art residency in China. She has held solo shows in Australia, Maryland and Delaware, and more recently Earthlings, a two-person show at ADS Gallery in Newburgh (2024), and The Companion at Practice Gallery in Philadelphia (2025). She has taught at Salisbury University, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, the New York Academy of Art and Pratt, and ran the ceramic studio at Clove Brook Farm.
Since 2024 she has co-organized Gold Star Fridge gallery. She received an Orange County Arts Council Sustainable Arts grant in 2025.
Practice. Ceramic sculpture, environmental installation and performance. She uses locally foraged Hudson Valley clay marbled into strata-like patterns, some based on pareidolia and insect camouflage, and presents them as cut-open cross-sections.
