Biography
Angel Lau is a percussionist based in Newburgh, New York. He studied classical percussion at Purchase College and has since widened his practice into Afro-Peruvian and Brazilian music and other folkloric and modern hand-percussion traditions. He has performed and recorded with the hip-hop group Kala and the Lost Tribe, Wallace Roney Jr., DreHall, Anaïs Maviel, Neil "Nail" Alexander, Kelly Quigley and the Birdland Latin Jazz Orchestra.
Much of his work is with dance: he is a percussionist for Odeon by Bessie Award winner Ephrat Asherie, which has toured to Spoleto Festival, Vail Dance Festival and Fall for Dance, and he has collaborated on a work in progress by Burkina Faso-born choreographer Souleymane Badolo. He is a faculty accompanist at Bard College and a teaching artist at Berkshire Pulse. At Holland Tunnel Gallery he played "Helena's Latin Grooves" with Heleen Schuttevaêr during the gallery's 25th-anniversary celebration on May 28, 2022, part of an evening of music marking the gallery's history since its 1997 founding in Williamsburg.
