The Women Artist Team (T.W.A.T) transformed the Holland Tunnel Gallery into The Bedroom, an immersive installation experience opening this Friday, October 20th and running through Sunday, November 12th. The Brooklyn gallery, “the smallest gallery of New York”, formerly a garden shed, is a unique art space which has been doubly transformed from an art gallery into a monochrome bedroom by a team of 16 women artists.
Typically the interior of the gallery is all white and brightly lit but The Bedroom installation completely alters the space; the result is an exploration of the color black. The color and scale of the space combined create an altered state for viewers. The imagery and objects contained within the show invite visitors to ponder the mysterious story of the imaginary inhabitant. Psychologically charged with the history of each participating artist, The Bedroom is simultaneously holy, erotic, memory-laden, irreverent, dangerous and ritualistic.

AS IF’ - the exhibit - is about the space between art & retail.

The installation consists of two identical silk screened images hand printed on canvas. One canvas has been stretched and hung on the wall as a painting.
The other has been stuffed, bagged, zippered and destined for service as a pillow. But the biggest difference between the two is the respective production cost of each.
A cost which, in this case, is higher for the  retail item than for the work of art.

Can art be touched or used? Does it need to be functional? Is it expected to hold up to repeated washings? No. But a pillow? Yes. It could be forgiven a casual observer wondering whether art is actually easier than retail. It is why ‘made in USA’ is more complicated than a feel good slogan.

An adjoining ‘Gift Shop’ offers additional ASIF-themed merchandise from $1 & up - postcards, t-shirts, and coffee mugs. There are also one-of-a-kind, silk screened pillows bearing a single word. These single-word pillows are priced as retail items and incorporate an original alphabet that hints at a deeper meaning for each.

Tweets now constitute news. This is either infuriating - or an opportunity for a pillow to aspire to profoundity, even if it may never be art.

     Bonsai miniatures  11″ x 14″, 2016 - 2017

Bonsai Garden is driven by Robert Egert’s continued interest in the human body, biologic processes, and their cultural interpretation. Bonsai Gardens explores how the scale of paintings creates different dynamics of production and consumption. Miniatures reduce  both the scale and force of gesture and eliminate visual immersion that are hallmarks of large-scale paintings. Miniature scale demands close proximity and elevates details of surface, edges and other formal qualities of finish.

Ginsburg can arguably be called the Clown Prince of pet portraiture, he never lets his prodigious painting skill get in the way of his sense of fun and deeply authentic self-expression. Loved by fellow artists - his work is found in the collections of Sol Lewitt, William Wegman, and many, many colleagues — he also works as an advocate for the community and bringing more people together with art and its creators. Also an avid supporter of animal rescue, he once again is donating a portion of his proceeds to the lifesaving and heartwarming programs of Williamsburg’s own BARC.

Angiola Churchill MY WORLD, MY ART.jpg
With the Guggenheim and the Whitney Museum featuring female art icons Agnes Martin and Carmen Herrera currently, Holland Tunnel Gallery is proud to present “My World, My Art” with works by Angiola Churchill, another iconic woman artist of the same generation. At 94, she is working in her Manhattan studio on “Variations in A Square”. Gallery-director Paulien Lethen invited her to show works on paper from this series, together with “Labyrinths”, 3-dimensional works in square lucite boxes, and “Transformations”, origami-style folded NYT advertisements.
Angiola Churchill has an international art career, spanning over 70 decades, living and working periods of time in Venice.
Ms Churchill herself was the radiant center of the festive opening reception in October. You are welcome to enjoy her lively art at Holland Tunnel, where director Paulien Lethen will be present for information throughout the show.

TRANSFORMATION
”Horror - the New York Times, aristocrat of the newspaper world, is advertising items for sale.
I am a snob, and I am against it!
I dont want sales advertisement combined with discussion of national and world problems.
So I take those advertisements, and make them say something else - something about art

Marieken Cochius 2016: A tension between what is present and what is sensed, but cannot be touched, continues to be the most consistent theme in my work. I am inspired by the origins of life, where energy needs to be temporarily contained and constrained in order for a transformation to happen.

In our worlds chaos predominates. There are no boundaries, everything is in flux and patterns are temporary, yet detected networks and systems exists.
This duality inspires me to try to catch the sensuality of the immaterial.
This new body of work is called: A Space Once Occupied, Now Empty. It is an exploration of empty space re-imagined occupied by the absent in two ways.
