HOLLAND TUNNEL GALLERY/PAROS PRESENTS ‘PANDEMONIUM’
WITH ARTS, JAZZ, POETRY AND FASHION
PANDEMONIUM is the 2011 summer program with exhibitions and special events from 22 July – 26 August 2011 in Holland Tunnel Gallery, Paroikia, Paros, Greece. Pandemonium - from the Greek word pande (all) and the Latin word daemon (demon) - is defined as a wild uproar, chaos, confusion, or a tumultuous din. This provocative theme is open to wide interpretation and reflects current world events.
The 17th century former merchant’s house in the center of Paroikia, Holland Tunnel’s residency since 2000, supplies the setting for the well-known Friday evening salons where artists and friends, tourists, residents and Greek neighbours gather. Three exhibitions start on July 22nd. International artists show their work in the ‘Pandemonium’ exhibition on both floors. The artists are Angiola Churchill, Susan Daboll, Fran Kornfeld, Claudia Lazzarini, Paulien Lethen, Richard Lethen, Alexandra Limpert, Bix Lye, Alice Meyer Wallace, Jan Mulder, Jacques Roch, Lliam Storms, Alexander Wuchterl and Apostolis Zolotakis. In ‘The Paros Room’, one of the arched spaces on the ground floor, Holland Tunnel presents paintings by retired shoemaker Nikos Karpodinis, who used to have his workshop behind the Market Street. Subjects are the sea, boats, backstreets, fields and other traditional Paros scenes. ’The Paros Room’ is the first edition of a new Holland Tunnel-project that will feature people who are part of the history of Paros. ‘The Art Of Vintage’ is a collection of original designer evening dresses and daily wear from 1930-1970. In the two bedrooms on the first floor, spectacular and outrageous vintage pieces are on display and will vary weekly. Visitors can dress up and be part of the Live Vintage Photo Shoots by Lliam Storms (July 22, Aug 5 and 19). The result can be seen in a photo presentation called ‘1001 Dreams’ (August 5 and following Fridays).
Two special events focus on jazz and poetry: Night of the Poets (Fri July 29) with Jeffrey Carson (USA) and Rory Brennan (Ireland), both with a long history on Paros, and composer/poet Anastazios (Anastasios Karpodinis), whose father is from Paros; and Holland Tunnel Jazz Night (Fri Aug 12) with pianist/vocalist Heleen Schuttevaêr and guests. Expected: Petros Varthakouris (bass), Vasilis Rakopoulos (guitar), Marc Buronfosse (bass) and others.
Friday Aug 19 the Pandemonium Model Drawing Class will be held in the salla (the high salon upstairs). Painter Alice Meyer Wallace and pianist/vocalist Heleen Schuttevaêr will create jazzy chaos to inspire the participants and entertain the spectators who are also most welcome to join this unusual art class. On Friday Aug 26 you are invited to join the artists for the Closing Reception of all shows (Pandemonium, The Paros Room, The Art of Vintage and 1001 Dreams).
The admission is free for all events. All rooms of Holland Tunnel, including the traditional Greek kitchen with bread oven, the library, the dining room, the courtyard and terraces are part of the exhibitions and open to the public. The gallery lies behind the Aghios Triada Church towards the end of the Market Street in Paroikia. It is the summer extension of Holland Tunnel Gallery New York.
