The theme of the summer 2009 exhibition, celebrating 10 years Holland Tunnel Gallery/Parikia, is “Dilemma”. The term dilemma usually indicates a choice between two or more alternatives, that cannot be made just on a logical basis. The choice from a dilemma is therefore often a very personal one.
New York-based Dutch gallery director/ Paulien Lethen, an artist herself, started the summer extension of her Holland Tunnel Gallery in New York 10 years ago, in 2000. She chooses classical themes from Greek mythology and philosophy for each exhibition, and invites artists to reflect on these themes and make special works for the exhibitions.
Holland Tunnel Gallery lies somewhat hidden behind the picturesque Aghios Triada Church in the Market Street of Parikia, yet many art and jazz lovers find their way to the art exhibitions and the jazz concerts that Paulien’s sister Heleen Schuttevaêr, a jazz pianist/vocalist, organizes through July and August with Greek and international guest musicians. Both floors of the 17th century merchant’s house supply the setting for arts and live jazz.
