DELFT BLUES

celebrating 400 years of  Netherland-Japan trading 1609-2009
with an exhibition of hand painted ceramics by New York and international artists

On permanent display till 2011 (by appointment only)
Location: Stairmasters (annex of Holland Tunnel)
59 South 3rd Street b/w Berry & Wythe, Brooklyn, NY, 11211

In 1609, the Emperor of Japan offered the trading monopoly, which had been held by the Portugese until that date, to The Netherlands. The Dutch kept this monopoly for 200 years. They brought medicines, metal and cloths to Japan and returned with lacquer ware, precious woods, tea, and especially ‘kraak’, blue-and-white  pottery from which the famous Delft Blue plates and vases originate.

Holland Tunnel Gallery-director and artist Paulien Lethen has lived in Japan and collected blue and white pottery there and in her home country The Netherlands. For the exhibition Delft Blues, that celebrates and pays tribute to the Dutch-Japanese 400 year connection, she invited local and international artists to reinvent the tradition of Delft Blue by decorating ceramics. She provided plates and paints, a new medium for most of the participants, which resulted in unexpected art works, varying from abstract to figurative to minimalist. Some 100 pieces are presented, including original Japanese and Dutch antique pieces. All artist pieces can be purchased. This dazzling show can be seen on four floors in the annex of Holland Tunnel, the Stairmasters.  Delft Blues will be on display until 2011 by appointment.
