For the 2008 exhibition, Holland Tunnel Paros is pleased to present Cosmos. The word “cosmos” is derived from the ancient Greek “kosmos,” meaning order or orderly arrangement; in effect, the opposite of “chaos.” Now the word is generally used as a synonym for “universe.” The philosopher Pythagoras is said to have been the first to apply the term to the universe, perhaps as a reference to the starry firmament. Since ancient times, people have been intrigued by the notion of what lies beyond the stars and artists find inspiration in the sheer endlessness of space.

Exhibiting artists include: Bix Lye, Jacques Roch, Toni Roch, Fran Kornfeld, Paulien Lethen, Alexandra Limpert, Jos Looise, Jan Mulder, Susan Daboll, Alice Wallace Meyer, Claudia Lazzarini, Dimitra Scandali, Thornton Willis, Angiola Churchill, Hugh Townley, Hans van Erp, Wim Drion, Jan van der Ploeg, and Maartje Seyferth.

In loving memory Hans van Erp, Hugh Townley and Luciano Lazzarini

Holland Tunnel Paros is located in the former storage rooms and courtyard of a 17th century merchant’s house, off the main shopping street in Paroikia, between Aghia Triada church and the Pirate Bar. The gallery is an extension of Holland Tunnel gallery in Williamsburg-Brooklyn, New York, an area now internationally known for its art scene and many galleries. Holland Tunnel NY has been operating since 1997 and because of its unusual structure and outstanding exhibitions, has been featured in the New York Times, Art in America, ArtForum and other leading publications. After starting the Holland Tunnel in NY it seemed natural for the director, Dutch-born artist Paulien Lethen, who lived many years on Paros and divides her time between NY and Paros, to extend the gallery to Paros and have exhibitions based on Greek themes.
